## The month

Nessa keeps the warm, sweet-smelling basket apart while the seed house is opened one basket at a time before the two customary witnesses. The damage is uneven. The warm lower basket does not sprout in the early trials and shows spreading spoilage; it is set aside as lost. A second damp lower lot produces mixed results. The raised baskets remain sound enough for planting and reserve.

A short dry interval gives Wen the two days he needs. He closes the leaking roof seam and adds airflow along the lower wall rather than merely covering the old damp. Nessa and Wen dry the questionable but not visibly spoiled grain in separated, marked lots. Nothing is returned to the sound reserve without its own result.

The garden households now have a conservative planting plan: the best-confirmed seed goes first into the most workable plots, while a protected portion remains for a second attempt or next season. Hazelstead has lost real seed, but it has not lost the whole planting position.

## Who acted

Corren leaves with four capable searchers after naming their route and return point. They follow Lio's trap marks through storm-felled timber and find him alive beneath a rough shelter. His ankle is broken. The party turns the search into a slow carry home rather than pushing farther into flooded ground.

Lio is weak, cold, and furious at needing help, but he is alive. Tamm expects the ankle to keep him from hunting through the coming month. No one else is injured in the recovery.

Ilya walks the garden edges with the households and marks only the smallest connections needed to move surface water. Tamm stops one proposed outlet before it can send dirty water toward a protected spring. The completed channels and raised crossings improve the most workable plots and the approaches to the six damp homes, though broad areas remain wet.

Beren supplies cutters and marks the regrowth poles needed for hurdles and repairs. During that work, Ilya finds a line of fresh axe marks extending into trees protected by custom. The marks look deliberate, but they do not say who ordered them. Beren calls them an old survey and objects to treating marks as a completed cut. Ilya asks that the boundary be walked before the next dry-weather work call.

The cutters finish this month's bounded work. Their dispute with the garden and coppice households has become sharper, not violent.
