## The living crop

Nessa and the garden households keep one shared account of the planted lots through rain, animal signs, and changing growth. The sound-seed plots generally hold. Their condition is not uniform, but most continue to justify the work spent on them.

One low edge tells a harder truth. Standing water and later animal disturbance leave part of it thin enough that the households can see the loss without pretending exact numbers. Ilya's small channels keep the workable approach open, but extending them would risk moving dirty water toward protected ground. Tamm stops that extension and names the safer crossing instead.

The mixed-lot comparison remains weaker than the sound lots. Nessa keeps it visibly separate and decides that continued observation is useful only where it does not steal care from the better plots. No one describes it as an equal crop.

The sound reserve remains dry, marked, and intact. The failing edge is visible, but the cause is not contained early enough to make a replacement planting a sound use of the reserve. Nessa, Ilya, the witnesses, and the affected households do not meet all three release conditions. Hazelstead records the loss rather than spending seed to hide it.

## The path-and-tree walk

Ava arrives with witnesses chosen at Juniper Fold. Hazelstead's party includes Beren, Ilya, a mixed-custody witness, a garden representative, and a person trusted on the northern approach. No one carries the authority to settle the matter alone.

The walkers agree on more than the earlier argument allowed. They recognize the main upland path, several bee trees, a stand of juniper, and the windbreak near the protected ground. Around those features both parties can describe conduct they have actually observed: travel without felling, seasonal gathering, and leaving the marked trees untouched.

The agreement ends at a narrower ridge-side strip. Old use signs there can support more than one account, and Beren's proposed line crosses the uncertain ground. Beren points to earlier cutting and hauling practice. Ilya and Juniper Fold's witnesses point to regrowth, path use, and trees treated as protected. The walkers record the difference instead of choosing whichever sign best serves the speaker.

No new axe mark is made. No tree is cut. The walk creates no permanent boundary, compensation, exchange, or land right.

At Hazelstead's hearing, the walkers report before advocates speak. The households confirm the no-cut behavior around the agreed features and continue temporary mixed custody around the unresolved strip. Beren's woodland knowledge remains part of the record, but his proposed line does not become permission. Ilya's case gains exact evidence, not authority over every tree.

## A future field, measured before claimed

With the crop watch operating and the walk complete, Beren leads the bounded survey with Ilya, a garden representative, and a witness. One possible site remains too wet and awkward after rain to justify its clearing and access cost.

The second is drier and could support a future choice. It would also consume useful timber and managed regrowth, require substantial hauling and keeping-open labor, and alter travel near an existing path. The group uses removable reference and leaves no felling mark. Its report creates a real tradeoff for a later household hearing, not a clearing decision.

## Care and hunting

Lio's ankle continues to improve. He can spend more time moving around the settlement and demonstrating route details, but Tamm does not clear him for ordinary hunting or heavy carrying. Corren maintains the smaller paired rotation. The younger hunter continues the route-and-shelter account, so familiar-route knowledge is becoming less dependent on one person's body.
