Turn 002 Results — Hazelstead

The month

Nessa opens the seed allocation before the named witnesses and garden households. The raised sound lots go first into the plots that held after last month’s drainage. A smaller portion remains dry, marked, and separate for a failed patch or a later season. Households with more labor do not receive seed that their ground cannot tend.

The mixed lower lot goes only into its clearly marked comparison patch. Its early result is useful and disappointing: shoots appear, but thinly and unevenly. Nessa keeps it out of the sound reserve. The patch may still yield something, but it cannot be counted as if the earlier damp did no harm.

Ilya and Tamm maintain the essential crossings and drainage links after heavy rain. Tamm stops one extension before it can turn dirty water toward a protected spring. The most workable plots and household approaches remain usable, while broader wet ground is left alone rather than cut into a larger drainage promise.

Hazelstead has a real planting position. It also has a smaller margin than it would have had without the seed loss.

Care and hunting

Lio does not carry, hunt, or test his ankle. Tamm allows him to sit with Corren and a younger hunter while he describes the western trap line, the shelters he used, the storm-felled timber, and the turn-back points that mattered during his injury.

Corren reorganizes the able hunters into a modest familiar-route rotation with fixed return times. The reduced group returns with some food and no new injury. It does not replace Lio’s normal contribution, but it avoids spending more people and safety to pretend that it can.

Lio’s swelling falls and the ankle remains set. He is not ready for ordinary hunting, but his route knowledge is no longer held by one injured person.

The grove hearing

Beren and Ilya walk the marked line with the mixed witness group. They identify the customary boundary, the fresh marks, the bee trees, the spring windbreak, and the point where the new line enters protected custom. No marked tree has yet been cut.

At the household hearing, cutter testimony establishes that Beren ordered the fresh line marked as a proposed clearing boundary. Beren acknowledges the instruction. He argues that marking a proposal is not the same as felling and that Hazelstead still needs dry ground and useful timber. Ilya answers that a proposed line inside protected custom cannot become permission merely because cutters placed it first.

The hearing does not strip Beren of his role. It adopts a temporary no-cut boundary around the disputed trees and assigns its record to a mixed witness group. Beren’s crews continue with approved regrowth poles, roofs, hurdles, and path work. Any permanent clearing decision must return with the land, seed need, labor cost, and woodland loss named openly.

The dispute is now about authority and future need, not hidden authorship.

Juniper Fold

After Nessa confirms the planting and reserve and the boundary record is complete, the paired delegation takes the familiar northern approach in settled weather. Ava of Juniper Fold receives the courtesy gift without treating it as payment for rights.

She approves of the temporary restraint around the marked trees but does not accept Hazelstead’s record as the whole boundary custom. She asks for a later witnessed walk covering the upland path, bee trees, juniper, and seasonal access. She returns a small gift of honey and makes no request for Hazelstead’s seed reserve, labor, or timber.

Ava also names the settlement reached by the eastern path: Ridgeford, a stone-working community at a river crossing. She gives no current account of its people, stores, or internal affairs.

Watch emergence closely and protect the reserve from quiet substitution.
Decide what failure threshold justifies using reserve seed.
Keep Lio’s recovery separate from pressure to restore hunting output too soon.
Prepare the permanent grove and clearing hearing without turning temporary custody into an unreviewed settlement.
Decide whether to accept Ava’s witnessed path-and-tree walk and what Hazelstead may offer or protect.
Treat Ridgeford as reported geography, not as knowledge of another community’s intentions or needs.
