What is ready to bring in
Nessa's first shared inspection prevents the word harvest from becoming a promise that every plot is ready at once.
Several garden yields and the earliest sound-seed plots have matured enough to take. The households bring those portions in by source, using the existing labor rotation when a family needs help. Wen repairs loose rack work and one roof edge without beginning a larger building project. Produce is kept thin, turned, and checked before it enters the protected stores.
A warm rain catches one small lot before it is fully covered. Because the sources remain separate, the damp portion is dried again and a visibly spoiled part is removed without being blended into the better stores. The loss is minor and knowable.
Most later grain is still growing. It is not counted as harvested merely because the first produce has come home.
The sound seed reserve remains sealed, marked, and separate. Nothing in the early account justifies opening it.
The mixed-lot patch finally answers its question. It produces little, remains uneven, and no longer rewards ordinary care. Nessa preserves the comparison in the record and retires most of the patch. Labor that would have maintained appearances returns to sound ground, drying work, and household needs.
The field hearing
Beren presents the dry site's advantages without pretending that dry means cheap. He describes the usable ground and hauling route. Ilya names the managed regrowth, timber, and path effects. Nessa explains that the reserve is protected and that much of the present crop is not yet home. Tamm shows where a large labor demand would weaken damp-home and clean-water work.
The households do not authorize permanent clearing.
They do authorize one small, removable preparation trial outside the protected features and the disputed ridge strip. Beren may lead the marking of an approach and a bounded coppice-management test. Ilya names the no-cut exclusions and the method for protecting useful regrowth. The work receives a labor ceiling, creates no exclusive allocation, and must return to the households before any felling or expansion.
Beren accepts the decision as a real path forward rather than the broad authority he wanted. Ilya accepts it because the trial tests maintenance and access without treating woodland loss as already chosen. Their rivalry remains, but it now has a bounded experiment instead of competing claims to immediate action.
The ridge-side strip
Ava accepts the narrow invitation after Hazelstead's harvest work is staffed. Both parties choose their own witnesses and walk only between the named points.
The old signs still support more than one history. The walkers do not settle ownership or draw a permanent boundary. They do establish present conduct that both sides can recognize: neither community cuts, removes signs, or creates new marks in the unresolved strip; the named path remains usable according to the conduct already witnessed; accusations or wider claims return to the households rather than becoming action in the wood.
The record distinguishes those commitments from the questions still open. Juniper Fold has not granted Hazelstead a permanent route or field right. Hazelstead has not surrendered its account of earlier use. The temporary no-cut behavior is now bilateral conduct for the strip, not proof of title.
Homes, water, and familiar routes
Ilya and Tamm keep only the drainage and crossings needed to protect homes and harvest access. Warm weather brings more insects around standing wet ground, but no contaminated channel is cut toward a spring.
Corren's paired familiar-route rotation continues. Lio contributes route teaching and light settlement work within Tamm's limits. He is more useful and more mobile than before, but does not return to ordinary heavy hunting by expectation alone.
