Turn 006 — Leave Claybank safer than we found it

Harvest and household security first

Alin has first call on carts, draft animals, and able field hands through harvest and storage. She sets the days when any terrace or kiln work may occur. Miri keeps a separate public account of harvested grain and legumes, field labor, household issues, injured-household support, and craft fuel. No pilot batch, site work, or trade offer may draw from seed, harvest transport, ordinary household fuel, or the injured families' shares.

Daia continues to set the two injured workers' limits. The worker who can move with support may choose light seated sorting or record work; the other receives no assignment beyond care. Their ordinary shares continue through the harvest, and no improvement is treated as recovery until Daia says so.

Prove the terrace through weather before expanding it

Hobb inspects the corrected drainage and hand-load path after the next substantial rain and before any further firing. If water collects at the soft edge, he closes the pilot and redirects only safe shallow sections; no one enlarges a channel toward fields, homes, or the old quarter. If the terrace remains firm, Miri and Hobb preserve a simple seasonal site record: date and severity of rain, water path, ground condition, and maintenance performed.

The old kiln quarter and clay path remain permanently closed for ordinary work this season. The dry terrace is the only candidate site. No cart route or bulk extraction is established until a future public allocation specifically provides for it.

One final, conditional repeatability batch

After Alin declares the harvest and immediate storage secure, Miri confirms that household warmth and ordinary fuel needs are covered, and Hobb confirms that the terrace has survived the rain check, Rusk may conduct one additional small batch in the existing reversible structure. It uses hand-carried clay only, marked non-food forms, and one counted fuel allowance. If any start condition fails, there is no firing this month.

Rusk directs preparation and teaches the backup tender. The named tender controls the vent. Daia and Hobb retain their stop authority, and every worker may stop without losing food or standing. Miri records preparation, material, weather, fuel, labor, defects, and water observation. There is no second allowance to rescue a bad result.

If the batch is safe and its defect rate is no worse than the prior pilot, Claybank may record a demonstrated capability: two repeatable, teachable small non-food batches at the terrace under the compact. That permits next season's council to consider a deliberately sized pilot-production schedule, but does not certify food storage, promise deliveries, authorize bulk extraction, or justify a permanent kiln wall now. If defects worsen or safety fails, the structure goes cold and the record says so.

Make the institutions outlast the leader

Before month end, I will ask the kiln and field households to witness four standing practices:

1. Shared firing requires a firm drained site, a named tender with immediate vent control, and unconditional worker stop authority.
2. Miri's firing and allocation records remain public, with a duplicate kept by the relevant skilled household.
3. Fuel, carts, and draft animals are allocated by a seasonal public decision; craft status creates no automatic claim on them.
4. The terrace receives a rain inspection before each new firing season, and the old quarter remains closed unless a separate safety finding reopens it.

Rusk retains craft direction, molds, and teaching under these rules. The backup tender and at least one additional willing worker receive supervised instruction from the two pilot records, so safe practice does not depend on one person's memory or obedience. Hobb retains ground stop authority, Daia bodily-safety authority, and Alin field priority. Miri preserves the ledger and the reasons for each limit.

Outsiders and the campaign's boundary

Venn keeps the Ferryend hazard note and makes no lakeward journey during harvest unless an immediate safety need arises. Claybank has no surplus proven for trade and no reliable knowledge of Merehaven. We leave Ferryend a respectful, debt-free channel rather than turn uncertainty into a promise.

I will spend my remaining attention on the harvest allocation, the rain inspection, and the public record of what the pilot did and did not prove. Claybank should end this campaign with less hidden risk, more distributed knowledge, and a credible next decision—not with an impressive structure that consumes the people it was meant to protect.
