Turn 006 — Make Ridgeford the Gate

Priority 1 — Conduct and measure Northbarrow's first passage

I will invite Oren's representative to a witnessed scheduling meeting with Mara, Sila, Dorr, Evin, Pell, and household witnesses. We will set one arrival window based on Evin's water and footing check, the named herd size and handlers, spacing, host, holding place, and a clear turn-back rule. Northbarrow's passage is a certified seasonal request, not an unrestricted opening: Evin may close the crossing for water, footing, or line trouble; Sila may stop the herd for crowding, animal distress, or loss of control; and neither outside pressure nor a promised arrival overrides those calls.

The first passage uses the smallest group that provides a meaningful test of the published limits, with experienced handlers and no unlisted animals or baggage. A Ridgeford host meets the party at the approach. The watch records arrival, roster, animals, passage order, delays, marker condition, hoof impact, and any use of the holding place. Dorr inspects the approach stone and the repaired core afterward; Evin inspects lines, footing, and the water conditions. Mara records the event separately from ordinary labor and grain accounts.

If the passage succeeds, it establishes evidence for this one seasonal use and nothing more. Northbarrow receives public credit for its labor and a written-or-spoken record of the conditions met. If a stone moves, an animal panics, or water changes, Evin or Sila stops the passage immediately, the party turns back or holds safely, and Dorr's next repair decision follows the evidence. There is no penalty for a safety closure and no argument at the bank.

After the party has completed or safely abandoned its passage, I will ask Oren for a voluntary reciprocal briefing: herd timing in the wider meadow, route hazards beyond Ridgeford, and any knowledge of the downstream clay-vessel settlement. This is a separate exchange of information, not a new toll or a hidden condition on access. The compact remains unchanged after the season; any later passage requires a new scheduling decision.

Priority 2 — Keep both routes and the gate reliable

Sila keeps the upland route active as a rain-limited fallback. It remains available for small supervised groups when the bridge closes, but its holding-feed account and demonstrated load are not erased by the new certification. She records whether the inaugural passage reduces or increases pressure on the soft bend, and closes either route before animal loss rather than after it.

Dorr and Evin inspect both approaches after the heavier use. The hoof-struck approach stone is reset or replaced before the next crossing, with Mara's witnesses recording material and labor. No one broadens the cattle limit, removes the existing spacing rule, or permits carts and mass loads on the strength of one successful passage.

Pell's narrowed watch remains at the approach, stock departure, alarm points, and hosted arrival. Because Pell joins the downstream party below, he must choose and brief a temporary message deputy from the existing roster before leaving. The deputy has no independent power to search, pursue, punish, or admit outsiders; the watch still observes and routes decisions to Evin, Sila, Dorr, or me.

Conditional opportunity — Find the pottery settlement and price the next advantage

Only after the Northbarrow passage is safely complete or formally postponed, the local watch has a deputy, and Mara confirms that food and essential work can spare a small party, Evin leads a downstream reconnaissance in one small boat with Pell and one household witness selected for reliability. The party carries provisions for a short outward journey and a guaranteed return margin; it takes no seed, project grain, or irreplaceable tool. A second boat remains at Ridgeford. Evin turns back for dangerous water, damaged boat or line, illness, blocked landing, or any condition that would consume the return reserve.

The party travels no farther than a fixed three-day downstream limit before turning back, whether or not it finds the settlement. It marks landings and hazards in a way Ridgeford can repeat and returns with observations separated into direct sight, hearsay, and inference. If it reaches a clay-vessel settlement, it identifies the people who control access, vessel types and uses, fuel or firing evidence, route conditions, nearby groups, and what they want. It may show ordinary nonessential samples only if Evin and Pell agree that doing so does not reveal stores or create an obligation; it may make no promise of labor, passage, protection, alliance, or territory, and it may not barter away seed, strategic tools, or food reserves. The desired result is a named contact and information for a future exchange, not a rushed treaty.

If the party finds no settlement, it returns with a usable downstream route sketch and a clear statement of what remains unknown. If it encounters a group that will not host it, it withdraws without pursuit or confrontation. A safe return outranks a dramatic discovery.

My role and final record

I chair the Northbarrow scheduling compact, witness the first passage, inspect the post-passage accounts, and authorize the downstream party only when the start conditions are met. I will not let a successful crossing tempt Ridgeford into pretending it controls every season or every herd. Our leverage comes from being the reliable gate: we publish limits, enforce them evenly, and make access worth negotiating for.

The final campaign record must include: the Northbarrow passage and any stoppage; approach and core condition afterward; dry and rain-limited route capacity; watch burden and deputy performance; the downstream party's route and direct observations; and any named pottery contact or reason the inquiry failed. Ridgeford ends this turn with either a functioning, measured regional crossing and a new source of information, or a stronger account of why the next advantage must wait.
