The river gives a window

The water does not become harmless. It does become readable enough for Evin to name a bounded work interval.

On the first suitable morning he checks the current, the bank footing, the lines, and the withdrawal route before releasing the work front. Dorr opens only the planned section. The prepared stone matters: the crew does not lose the interval hunting for pieces or arguing about sequence. Ridgeford and the named Northbarrow workers seat and key the new work while Mara's witnesses count stone, grain, labor, and Dorr's separate restoration contribution.

The contribution is completed and credited under its own heading. Dorr retains technical direction, but the work he owed cannot disappear into the general account.

Later in the phase, softened footing changes under one line. A worker calls the pause; Evin inspects it and stops the bank work for the day. The open section is left in a safe condition, and no one is trapped below the withdrawal route.

After the work has rested, unladen crossings and controlled light loads pass within Evin's limits. The new section holds through those tests. Dorr argues that the result is exactly what his sequence was meant to produce. Evin agrees that it is progress and refuses to call it cattle proof. The stone still needs settling time and another inspection before a cattle test can be considered.

The western core therefore remains closed to cattle. People and light loads continue only under the existing limits.

The compact and the stock route

Northbarrow's named workers receive public credit for the phase and the same progress account Ridgeford receives. No additional workers or animals enter with them. Oren's people accept that the safety conditions have not changed, but they now ask for a specific timetable for the next inspection. Their earned future request for seasonal passage remains intact; it has not become early access, meadow ownership, or a voice over Evin's stop call.

The upland stock route continues to carry small supervised groups. Warm rain softens the bend again, and Sila closes it before the wear becomes a loss. The pause is shorter this time because the herders know where to reset the markers, how to space the next groups, and what holding feed is needed below. Her record now distinguishes what the route can carry in ordinary dry weather from what must wait after rain.

It remains a seasonal path, not a road and not permission to enlarge the herd movement without another account.

A second month of the watch

Pell posts the household shares before the roster begins. One family points out that its river work and watch duty overlap during the structural phase; the weekly review exchanges those turns rather than praising the family for silently carrying both.

The watch deals with visitors, loose stock, changed route conditions, and work-front messages. It meets the Northbarrow party at the approach and waits for the roster and host. Two unfamiliar travelers choose to wait while a purpose and host are established. No one is chased or searched.

The unfamiliar-arrival and repeated-danger signals are now understood well enough that households move children, animals, and store work without the confusion seen in the first trial. The relevant lead takes over when a danger is specific. Pell coordinates the message and does not become the person who decides every response.

Orra repairs the loose shield fastening from genuine scrap after shelter and crossing needs are met. The few staffs and two shields remain serviceable for warning and withdrawal practice. No additional equipment is made.

By month's end, Ridgeford has renewed a useful public routine, not created an armed office. Its burden and authority remain open to review.

Matters requiring attention

Set the next inspection only after the new stone has had time to settle.
Decide what evidence Evin and Dorr require before the first cattle test.
Give Northbarrow a plain timetable without promising the result of that test.
Keep the stock route's holding-feed requirement visible when rain interrupts movement.
Review whether the watch should continue unchanged, narrow to its most useful posts, or expire when the crossing work changes.
